12 Essential Healthcare Success Podcast Episodes Every Healthcare Leader Should Hear
People often ask me where to start with the Healthcare Success Podcast. Launched in 2011 and now weekly, I’ve recorded over 250 episodes.
Now that we've surpassed 250 episodes, it's a question I've been thinking about more than ever. Reaching this milestone has given me a chance to reflect on hundreds of conversations with hospital CEOs, physician leaders, CMOs, entrepreneurs, researchers, and innovators who are shaping the future of healthcare. Every interview has taught me something, and I'm incredibly grateful to every guest who has shared their experience and perspective.
Looking back, though, there are a handful of more recent episodes I find myself recommending over and over again. They aren't necessarily our most downloaded interviews, nor are they simply conversations with the biggest names. They're the episodes that changed the way I think about leadership, healthcare marketing, innovation, and improving patient care.
If you're new to the podcast—or if you've been listening for years but are looking for the conversations that have had the greatest impact on my own thinking—these are the episodes I'd recommend starting with.
Leadership That Drives Healthcare Forward
Execution Beats Ideas: Smile Brands' Lessons from Building a 600-Location Healthcare Organization
Guest: Steve Bilt, CEO & Co-Founder, Smile Brands
Steve emphasizes that great organizations aren't built on brilliant ideas alone. Rather, they're built on disciplined execution. Smile Brands has grown into one of the country's largest dental organizations because Steve understands something many leaders overlook: alignment beats inspiration. Everyone in the organization must understand not only what the strategy is, but why it matters.
What makes this conversation essential is that Steve's lessons extend far beyond dentistry. Whether you're leading a health system, physician group, or healthcare company, his practical approach to navigating growth, acquisitions, AI adoption, and organizational change offers leadership lessons that remain relevant long after the latest management trend has faded.
From Law to Media Entrepreneur: How Scott Becker Shaped Healthcare Thought Leadership
Guest: Scott Becker, Partner, McGuireWoods LLP; Founder, Becker's Healthcare
Scott Becker has become one of healthcare's most influential voices, but what fascinates me isn't simply what he built—it's how he built it. His career is a masterclass in earning trust, creating authority, and consistently delivering value over decades. Those qualities matter just as much for healthcare organizations as they do for media companies.
I chose this episode because in his “origin story,” Scott shares practical leadership principles that anyone can apply. Whether you're trying to grow a healthcare organization, build a respected brand, or establish yourself as a trusted industry voice, his perspective on consistency, relationships, and long-term thinking is invaluable.
The Most Critical Drivers of Hospital Safety Today: Insights from Leapfrog's Leah Binder
Guest: Leah Binder, President & CEO, The Leapfrog Group
Patient safety is often discussed in terms of policies, regulations, and quality metrics. Leah Binder brings a different perspective. Drawing on decades of experience evaluating hospitals across the country, she explains that the strongest safety cultures almost always begin with leadership. The decisions executives make shape every other outcome.
This episode stands out because it reframes patient safety as a leadership challenge rather than simply an operational one. If you lead a hospital or health system—or aspire to—you'll come away with a better understanding of the behaviors and priorities that distinguish high-performing organizations from everyone else.
How One Health System CEO Built a Medical School to Tackle Rural Doctor Shortages
Guest: Dr. Kenneth Holmen, President & CEO, CentraCare
Healthcare's workforce shortage isn't a temporary problem, and Dr. Kenneth Holmen doesn't pretend otherwise. Instead of waiting for someone else to solve it, CentraCare chose to invest in its own future by helping launch a medical school specifically designed to train physicians for rural communities. It's one of the most forward-thinking workforce strategies I've encountered.
I included this conversation because it demonstrates what leadership looks like when organizations stop reacting to industry challenges and start reshaping the future themselves. Dr. Holmen's willingness to rethink traditional workforce development offers valuable lessons for healthcare leaders facing long-term strategic challenges of every kind.
Building Stronger Healthcare Organizations
Doctor-First Marketing Strategies to Improve Patient Outcomes
Guest: Dr. Douglas Flora, Executive Director of Oncology, St. Elizabeth Healthcare
One of the themes you'll hear repeatedly throughout this podcast is that great healthcare marketing begins with understanding the people you're trying to serve. In this conversation, Dr. Douglas Flora takes that one step further by explaining that it also begins with understanding your physicians. Rather than treating doctors as spokespeople for marketing campaigns, he shows how to engage them around a shared mission to improve patient outcomes.
I think every healthcare marketer can learn something from this episode. Dr. Flora shares practical ideas for building physician trust, using patient stories more effectively, and creating mission-driven campaigns that resonate with both clinicians and patients. If you've ever struggled to get physicians genuinely engaged in your marketing efforts, this conversation offers a thoughtful roadmap.
House of Brands vs. Branded House: Scaling Healthcare Without Losing Local Trust
Guest: Matt Hall, Chief Experience Officer, Smile Brands
I've known Matt Hall for nearly two decades, and few people have had a better vantage point from which to watch healthcare organizations grow. During his Matt helped build Pacific Dental Services, grew the Smile Generation brand, and watched firsthand how branding strategies change as organizations expand through acquisitions and new markets.
I chose this episode because it tackles one of the most important branding questions facing healthcare leaders today: should you build a single enterprise brand, preserve local brands, or find a way to do both? Matt combines decades of real-world experience with practical insights about culture, acquisitions, patient trust, and long-term growth. Whether you're leading a regional health system or a national platform, this is a conversation you'll likely revisit.
Can Private Equity and Patient Care Co-Exist? A Behavioral Health CEO's Perspective
Guest: Steve Page, Founder & CEO, SUN Behavioral Health
Private equity has become one of the most debated topics in healthcare, and too often the conversation is reduced to headlines and assumptions. Steve Page brings a much more thoughtful perspective. Rather than framing private equity as inherently good or bad, he explores the incentives that shape healthcare organizations and argues that leadership—not ownership structure—is ultimately what determines whether patients receive outstanding care.
I recommend this episode because it challenges conventional thinking without taking an ideological position. Whether you work for an independent provider, a nonprofit health system, or a private equity-backed organization, Steve offers valuable insights into balancing financial sustainability with a genuine commitment to patients. It's one of the most nuanced discussions we've had about healthcare leadership and organizational strategy.
The Future of Healthcare Marketing & AI
How to Get AI to Recommend and Cite Your Brand
Guest: Duane Forrester, Former Microsoft Search Leader; AI Search Expert; Author of The Machine Layer
If you've followed my recent writing, you know I'm convinced AI is fundamentally changing how patients discover healthcare organizations. That's why this conversation with Duane Forrester is one I recommend to almost everyone. Duane has spent decades helping shape search technology, first at Microsoft and now as one of the leading voices on AI-powered discovery. Along with my colleague Brandon Schakola, we explore what happens when AI becomes the intermediary between healthcare organizations and the patients they're trying to reach.
What makes this episode essential is that it moves beyond the hype. Instead of speculating about the future, Duane explains the practical steps healthcare organizations can take today to increase the likelihood that AI systems will recommend and accurately represent their brands. If you're trying to understand what comes after traditional SEO, this is the conversation to start with.
Digital Tracking Technologies & HIPAA: Latest Updates and Ongoing Risks
Guest: James Corr, Head of Partnerships, Freshpaint
Healthcare marketers have never had to navigate a more complicated regulatory environment than they do today. The government's scrutiny of web tracking technologies has forced organizations to rethink tools that many once considered routine. James Corr does an outstanding job of cutting through the confusion and explaining what's actually changed—and why it matters.
I included this episode because every healthcare marketing leader should understand the balance between protecting patient privacy and maintaining meaningful marketing insights. James explains the risks surrounding technologies like Facebook Pixel and Google Analytics in plain English, making this an invaluable resource for marketers, compliance leaders, and healthcare executives alike.
Surprising Insights on Healthcare Marketing
Guest: David Feinberg, Senior Vice President, Chief Marketing & Communications Officer, Mount Sinai Health System; Dean of Marketing & Communications, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai
I've admired David Feinberg's work for years because he consistently elevates the conversation around healthcare marketing. Rather than treating marketing as a promotional function, he views it as a strategic discipline that directly supports patient care, physician engagement, and organizational success. It's a perspective I share, and this conversation explores why that mindset is becoming increasingly important.
What makes this episode stand out is David's ability to challenge assumptions. We discuss everything from earning credibility with clinicians to preparing for AI's growing influence on healthcare communications. If you're looking for a conversation that combines practical marketing advice with thoughtful leadership, this remains one of my favorite interviews.
Innovation Changing Patient Care
How HealthTrackRx Revolutionized PCR Testing by Delivering Next-Morning Results at Scale
Guest: Martin Price, CEO, HealthTrackRx
Innovation in healthcare isn't always about inventing something entirely new. Sometimes it's about solving an existing problem better than anyone thought possible. Martin Price explains how HealthTrackRx transformed infectious disease testing by combining an innovative business model, strategic partnerships, and operational excellence to deliver next-morning PCR results at a national scale. It's a compelling reminder that execution and innovation often go hand in hand.
I included this episode because it demonstrates how operational breakthroughs can have a direct impact on patient care. Faster, more accurate diagnoses help physicians make better treatment decisions while improving outcomes and lowering costs. For healthcare leaders interested in scaling innovation, this conversation offers valuable lessons that extend well beyond laboratory medicine.
Guest: Katy Worrilow, Founder & Chief Scientific Officer, LifeAire Systems
One of my favorite types of podcast conversations begins with someone asking a simple question that everyone else overlooked. In Katy Worrilow's case, that question was why clinical pregnancy rates in her IVF laboratory were suddenly declining despite no obvious changes in people or processes. Her determination to find the answer led to an unexpected discovery about airborne contaminants—and ultimately to an entirely new approach to protecting patients in healthcare environments.
I wanted to include this episode because it perfectly illustrates how scientific curiosity can lead to innovations with far-reaching implications. What started as an effort to improve outcomes in a single IVF laboratory has expanded into technology designed to reduce healthcare-acquired infections and improve safety in operating rooms, intensive care units, senior living communities, and other healthcare settings. It's an inspiring reminder that some of healthcare's biggest breakthroughs begin with leaders who refuse to accept unexplained results.
When I started the Healthcare Success Podcast, my goal wasn't simply to interview interesting people. It was to create conversations that healthcare leaders could return to long after they were recorded—discussions that challenge assumptions, share practical ideas, and ultimately help improve healthcare organizations and the patients they serve.
Looking back after more than 250 episodes, I'm grateful for every guest who has shared their expertise and perspective. These 12 conversations stand out because they've had a lasting impact on the way I think about leadership, marketing, innovation, and the future of healthcare. I hope they'll do the same for you.
If you enjoy these episodes, I invite you to explore the rest of the Healthcare Success Podcast library. More than 250 conversations later, I'm convinced the best ideas often come from listening to thoughtful people share what they've learned—and we're just getting started.
