Turning Employees into Champions

By Stewart Gandolf, Chief Executive Officer

[SHSMD15 Podcast Series] Again this year, Healthcare Success is pleased to present this series of conversations with industry thought leaders who will be speaking at the 2015 Conference of the Society for Healthcare Strategy & Market Development of the American Hospital Association, #SHSMD15.

One of the insightful presentations at SHSMD 15 will be a case study examination of how Baystate Health reached out to their 10,000+ employees to build their employer brand and develop a value proposition that defines the best of the Baystate Health culture.

Healthcare Success CEO Stewart Gandolf and Lauren Henss talk with Jennifer Faulkner, Vice President of Team Member Engagement and Communications at Baystate Health (Springfield, Massachusetts Area), about her presentation titled: Turning Employees into Champions.

In this podcast we learn how Baystate Health engaged it’s large employee base and successfully created an identity statement. The resulting message resonates “loud and clear” with many audience segments including physicians, leaders, board members and all of its team members. What’s more, it has become the promise of the organization’s strategic plan, and it’s something their team members truly believe in.

A Higher State of Caring…

Jennifer discusses how, in addition to external marketing messages, it’s both timely and important to work in an inward-facing way and tap into the insights of their team members. Employees know the organization best, and they can be its first-line champions.

“If an organization wants to develop an employer brand, become more high performing or achieve specific goals,” Jennifer observes, “tapping into the internal audience not only gives them inspiration, but also offers a critical knowledge of what’s going on day to day.

“Beyond that, it sends a message to the team members that the organization and leadership really care about [the employees], they care about what they think, what they feel and what they experience. It helps to build trust and makes employees want to be champions and help the organization succeed.”
